“Is the Numis Network

Business Opportunity

a Scam?”

I really like the idea of buying gold and silver right now as a hedge against an uncertain future.  Our world economy is so uncertain that even the once mighty U.S. dollar looks shaky.  Our country’s (speaking as a US citizen) deficit spending has me worried.  Even Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke admitted that the spending it is not sustainable.

In fact, I was surfing You Tube and came across this video that kind of confirmed my beliefs.  It is about an hour, so if you don’t have time to watch it now, be sure and bookmark this page so you can come back.

So, what does this have to with Numis?  First of all, I am not saying that it is a scam.  (I will leave that to those that have more expertise than me -- click here)   However, using it as a method of collecting coins and as a business opportunity has me shaking my head a little bit.  Why do you ask?

Let me explain…

If you look at the way that any MLM is structured, there has to be a markup on the product to pay all of those levels of people above you.

Now, don’t get me wrong.   Mark-up is good.  It is the American way and all businesses must make a profit to stay in business.   However, with most MLMs that mark-up is excessive.

Typically, an MLM has a lotion or potion that they wrap a story around – you know it goes something like this.

“Until now, the juice of the mailooki plant has only been known to the Kailuka indians who live deep in the Amazon rainforest over 1000 kilometers from any other human. This tribe was discovered only recently and scientists across the globe have been studying them because they all live to be over 120 years old. The juice from this miraculous plant has been found to have amazing healing properties…”

I know I may seem a little cynical, but I have heard versions of that story so many times attached to the latest miracle cure from so many companies.  Of course the MLM companies have to concoct that story so that can justify selling you juice for $100 that they know you can get from your local vitamin store for $20.  And of course, they must sell it for $100 so that they can pay all of those multiple layers.

However, aren’t silver and gold coins a little different?  After all, a graded coin from Numis is the same as a graded coin from a dealer except

  • the Numis silver coin has a business opportunity attached to it and
  • you will pay more for it.

Some Numis Network marketers are using videos featuring Rich Dad author Robert Kiyosaki  recommending that people purchase silver and gold, as a hedge against inflation and an investment. But don’t be misled, Mr. Kiyosaki NEVER recommends that you purchase graded numismatic collectible coins.

His gold and silver advisor Michael Maloney, who wrote Rich Dad’s Guide to Investing in Gold and Silver, advises that you purchase bullion bars and coins, NOT graded numismatic collectible coins.

In the book he statesI think that anyone buying ‘brand new collectibles’ is being taken for a rideand advises toSteer clear and don’t buy into gold and silver network marketing plans“.

BTW, this company is generating a lot of controversy.  There is read  thread on Better Networker here.   Another blogger, Jon Pomitz almost joined Numis and changed his mind, he lists his reasons here.  A coin collector, Tami Burris brings up some good points here

So, in my thinking it makes more sense to make your money elsewhere and buy your coins cheap.  You can buy 5 coins for the price of one coin with Numis.  After all, if the dollar really collapses and becomes worthless, who is really going to care where your coins came from.  It will only matter that you had more of them than the next guy.
